Polymer Bearings Show Pipe Cameras The Way
X-Tek Innovations in Oldham is using Igus bearings on a cable reel for cameras used in underground pipes. The injection moulded, polymer bushes were selected for their low wear, long life, low cost and ability to handle arduous conditions. The XT1750 and XT2500 cable reels are heavy duty but easy to use. The reel is manoeuvrable, even over rough terrain, and can maintain a low centre of gravity. Large wheels and pneumatic tyres are used for stability. X-Tek required the reel's bearings to resist harsh, wet conditions, and to be self-aligning. The company also needed to reduce the total cost of fabrication. The reel uses two Iglidur M250 thrust washers, which are low weight, maintenance free and non-corrosive. Two Igubal EFSM spherical flange bearings were also specified for the same reasons and because they are self-aligning. The cable reel must withstand mud, sand and sewage in the environment it operates. Both types of bearing work in this dirty environment. The bearings are also resistant to damage and can cope with the shock and impact the reel undergoes while being transported. The application was shortlisted for the Manus plastic plain bearing design awards at the end of 2004.
