Delphi Secures $469 Million in Steering Column Business
Delphi Corp.has strengthened its position as the leading global steering column producer by securing new business wins across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The new business secured represents a 51-percent increase in annual global steering column booked business since 2002 and will bring Delphi an additional $469 million over the life of the contracts. At the customers' request, details of the contracts remain confidential. The new and retained contracts include a variety of car, truck and commercial vehicle applications. They will utilize both manual and power, rake, rake and telescope, tilt and telescope and active energy absorbing steering column technology. Delphi is a leader in occupant safety technology, having created its first energy absorbing device for 1967 model year vehicles. Delphi's latest energy absorbing device is the pyrotechnic actuator, available on its active energy absorbing steering column, which adjusts the column energy absorption level to driver size and driving conditions. Aside from leading the industry in energy absorbing technology, Delphi is also a leader in advanced electronic integration. With electronic content rapidly increasing on vehicles, subsystems must be integrated, often requiring an interface with the steering column. Delphi's engineering experience and knowledge coupled with global engineering capabilities, enables it to design steering columns and solve complex steering problems for customer applications around the world. In addition, Delphi produces columns in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and South America, thereby giving Delphi the ability to manufacture columns where its customers are located.
