Schaeffler Discuss Fuel Saving Technologies at 2007 The Schaeffler Group - a leading global manufacturer of rolling bearings and linear products - is presenting two technical papers during the annual 2007 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress held in Detroit from April 16 to 19. The company will discuss its research surrounding new fuel-saving technologies through two presentations at the Congress and one written paper, which will be released for purchase at the event. As an engineering partner and supplier to almost all automobile manufacturers and major suppliers worldwide, the Schaeffler Group's Automotive Division offers a variety of products for the entire vehicle,including engine, transmission, chassis and accessory drives. Through its INA, FAG and LuK brands, the company's products provide reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions for customer vehicle applications. The Schaeffler Group's first paper at the SAE World Congress is titled "High Performance Electric Camshaft Phasing System" and will be given on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:45 p.m. by Jens Schaefer and Jeff Balko from INA Schaeffler KG. This presentation addresses a new ultra-fast electrically operated cam phasing system that allows rapid adjustment of cam timing for all engine speeds and engine temperatures. This allows an aggressive calibration of the cam timing, hence improving fuel economy and engine response. The system can even be used during engine start-up, hot idle or at sub-zero temperatures. It can ideally be combined with novel combustion concepts, such as direct injection (DI) or homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI). Additional fuel economy benefits can be gained by adapting the engine oil system to the reduced requirements. The Schaeffler Group will discuss its innovative solution to electrical camshaft phasing in this presentation and show test results that demonstrate the systems abilities. The company's second paper, "Active Fuel Management(TM) (AFM) Technology: Hardware Development on a 2007 GM 3.9L V-6 OHV SI Engine," will be presented jointly with representatives from General Motors Corp. on Thursday, April 19 at 1:30 p.m. Authors of the paper are: David Kehr; James Westbrook III; Henning Karbstein; and Mario Kuhl from the Schaeffler Group, INA, and Mark Stabinsk; William Albertson; and Jim Tuttle from GM. The presentation will discuss the new AFM system and the modifications and packaging challenges of adapting the AFM system to the 2007 3.9L V-6 engine. This approach to cylinder deactivation can lead to fuel economy improvements of up to 5 to 7 percent. A third paper, "Front End Accessory Drive Vibration Control Solutions for Engines with Cylinder Deactivation," will be offered for purchase throughout the show at the SAE bookstore. This paper investigates and recommends vibration control solutions based on the increase of torsional energy in the front end accessory drive, which results from deactivating cylinders in an engine.
