NSK Develops New Cage That Reduce Maintenance Requirement

NSK Americas is pleased to announce the introduction of a new and advanced pin-type cage design for tapered roller bearings and cylindrical roller bearings which delivers superior performance under severe shock load. Ideally suited to applications in harsh environments where bearings are exposed to wear particles from gear teeth, these new bearings can help significantly reduce maintenance costs and downtime, especially in the rolling mills of the steel industry. There are two key components that contribute to the improvements in wear and failure resistance of these bearings. First, the innovative new pin-type cages feature a pin running through the bore of each roller that maintains clearance between the rollers and the cage, as well as equal and consistent spacing between rollers. The new design also eliminates the clearance found in conventional pin-type cages between the pin and the cage side plate thereby reducing the force applied to the welded areas of the cage side plate by large impact loads caused by rapid acceleration and deceleration. The result of these design innovations is a 6-fold increase in the durability of the cage compared to its conventional counterpart. Secondly, the bearings themselves are made of new SAC steel which doubles the service life of the bearings compared to bearings made of conventional steel. Given the critical nature of these bearings in the stable and reliable operation of large-size gearboxes, combined with the difficulties and cost associated with maintenance and service because of the large size, the development of this new cage and bearing design will come as welcome news to customers across a number of industries.
